While our main goal is to connect post-education adults with TTRPGs and community, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to help connect kids and their families to TTRPGs as well!

Dice Goblins

—

We're gearing up to debut Thieves Run's go at kids' programming, and we're calling it Dice Goblins.

The emphasis will be "Kids Running for Kids", something which I've had a lot of success with at my TTRPG summer camps the last three years.

Myself and a paid staff member will be there to equip kids with the resources, tips, tricks, and perspectives necessary to be a good player and a good GM.

Right now we're figuring out background checks for myself and the second staff (if you know a good place to run background checks for childcare professionals, feel free to let me know in #bothering-cali!), and we've figured out our initial schedule. Other steps we are taking or have taken towards this ends are rearranging the Den (see previous post about the upcoming work day) and adding locks to our Makerspace to turn it into our office so that we can lock all our particularly dangerous items (laser engraver, swords, heat press, etc) safely away.

Dice Goblins Election Day Kickoff

We're kicking off Dice Goblins on Election Day with 2 four hour segments and 12 slots available for each segment.

- Part I: 8am-Noon
- Part II: Noon-4pm

Folks can sign up for one or both.

PRICE

Each segment will be $30/child ($60 for both). Payment can be made in person ahead of time or day of.

AGE RANGE

In my experience, age has much less to do with how well a kid will enjoy/be able to participate than the individual factors surrounding their ability to listen to what's going on and build on it. I've had 2nd Graders who were locked in the whole time and middle schoolers who loved every second, and I've had middle schoolers who were uninterested in playing pretend or playing with kids too much younger than them and I've had kids of all ages whose attention span or ability to listen to other kids just weren't yet at the level necessary to play D&D.

I have paper and legos available for free draw and free build at any point if kids want to take a break. Consent in TTRPGs is very important, and no kid will be forced to participate if they don't want to, even if the thing they don't want to do is the thing that we're here to do.

I also have a much simpler system than D&D that I have 3 years of experience teaching to kids and then letting them run wild with it. I call it the Story Building Game, and you can find materials for that at this link https://www.thievesrun.com/storybuilding because this summer one of my kids begged me to give her access to printable files so she could go home and play the Story Building Game with her sister and parents, which was so adorable I made that webpage as soon as I got home from camp. Kids who really want to play D&D will still be given the resources to do so, but we will also have the Story Building Game as a more rules lite alternative.

Dice Goblins | Monday Afterschool Club

From November 9th to at least December 7th, we'll be hosting a weekly Dice Goblins event between 3pm and 5pm.

We'll have a capacity of 18 slots, and we plan to expand to Thursdays in 2027 if all goes well.

PRICING

The cost would be $15 per day per kid, and members would get advanced registration as well. For now, it would be weekly pay as we go, but in 2027 I would expect a more typical multiple-months-at-a-time pay schedule.

AGE RANGE

Basically the same as what I wrote for the Election Day Kickoff, but I would add that group synergy and falling into a rhythm becomes more of a thing when you meet week after week.

Theme Restated

The goal of Dice Goblins is to provide a space for kids to have fun and be equipped for a lifetime of fun with TTRPGs.
